How to Calculate Energy of a Photon.

Rosemary Njeri

The photon is sometimes referred to as a quantum of electromagnetic energy is a bundle of electromagnetic energy.

Photons is the basic unit that makes up all light. They are not thought to be made up of smaller particles. They are a basic unit of nature called an elementary particle.

Often we use the units of eV, or electron volts, as the units for photon energy, instead of joules.

Formula to calculate energy of a photon using the Planck’s equation.

Calculate Energy of a Photon.

h is the Planck’s constant (6.63 * 10^-34 Joule seconds).

f is the frequency of the light in hertz.

Example:

A lamp emits a yellow light with a frequency of 5.0 x 10 ^14 Hz. Calculate the photons energy. (h = 6.63 * 10^-34 Js )

Therefore, the photons energy is 3.32 x 10 ^ -19.
